Book Review : The Mermaid Chair

Frankly, I cannot relate to the story at all.

A woman in her 40s (Jessie) has a "happy, peaceful but stagnant marriage", found herself having to return to Egret Island, her childhood home due to her mother who had militated her finger.

Her mother appears to be deeply disturbed. While in Egret Island, Jessie found herself connecting to her past and learning the mystery surrounding the death of her father and her mother's behaviour.

During her short stay with her mother, she found herself falling in love with Brother Thomas (a monk who's about to take his solemn vow) and then distant herself away from her husband. Nearly divorcing him. She questions her future to start a new life with this monk and live away from her husband.

There're scenes of them (Jessie & Bro Thomas) making love... and then her husband finding out about her affair through her paintings. Finally, she has a clear mind, she realised that she loves her husband and returns to him. He forgives her (pretty easily). The End.

Though lots of readers have said it is a touching story, that it's bold to tackle issues of love, betrayal, grief, forgiveness etc, I do not feel the same.

Does this mean that whenever we feel an urge for independence, a need to break away from our routine and our marriage that we go out & meet someone to fall in love? I cannot comprehend the gist of it all. Actually, I shouldn't be judgemental as we all have to make personal choices with our lives.
