Book Review - Not Without My Daughter

Sat, 13 Oct

It evolves around the marriage between Betty (an American lady), Moody (her Iranian husband) and Mathob (their daughter). Betty was persuaded by her husband to take a 2 weeks holiday in Iran and to visit his family. Though she had ill feelings about this trip, she decided to agree to it.

2 weeks went by, Betty realised that Moody had no intentions to return to America. He wanted to stay in Iran. She & Mathob were held captive by Moody, constantly abused and unwell due to unhygienic living conditions. They cannot return to America without their passports and due to Iranian laws (they cannot travel without the written consent of the head of the family, ie her husband). Needless to say, their marriage failed. She spent days after days planning, plotting their escape from Iran. In the book, she described her difficulties to seek help and to trust people. There was no way she was leaving Iran without her daughter. She couldn't risk leaving her daughter behind with her father and his family. She cannot imagine what they will do to her.

After nearly 1.5 years of imprisonment in Iran, she found a way out! They had to journey through long hours of car journey into the border of Iran and crossing Turkey. (It wasn't an easy trip - cars, trucks, horses, walking in mountain with the thick snow). In Turkey, they were able to seek the assistance of the US Embassy who repatriated them home.

I enjoyed reading the book and I'm sorry for such misfortune to have fallen onto this lady & her young child.

Read it but with an open-mind. This is simply Betty's experiences with the Iranian, the country, & Islamic religion. I am sure there are also warm and loving sides of Iranian & Iran waiting to welcome others.
