In 1992, we were commissioned to produce a collage artwork for our o-levels art examination. One afternoon, armed with a camera, we went around the streets of Singapore snapping photos of our local scene. I can never forget the day - while taking photos, I was also cursed by ah-mas (who hated having their photos taken due to supersitious reasons). But my girlfriends and I had fun. We even took the opportunity to relax at the Raffles Hotel.
I believe I had 36 photos to select from and my art teacher picked this photo for me to work on. The photo was enlarged and then photocopied to A3 size. Using a carbon paper, I traced the image onto a wooden board and painstaking using bits of magazines and glue to form the collage as close as possible to the photo.
I remembered I spent many nights glued to my little stool, and working on this artwork till wee hours of the morning. Often I was chatting with my friend over the phone as well. MOTH was my regular phonepal. I enjoyed chatting with him while working on my artwork. (But guess what, we never turned our friendship into a relationship)...
My mother kept this artwork for me. Finally, I brought it home. HOME... long time ago, it seems like an impossible dream and wish. It has now been framed and will be mounted on the wall by the man who kept me company during those long nights 15 years ago.
Interestingly, I found an article regarding the iconic doorman. He has aged too (but gracefully)... http://www.raffles.com/rafflesworld/news_05.html
